Travertine - is calcite, which is formed on the bottom near the carbon dioxide of volcanic sources. It can also be found in the caves, where it forms stalactites and stalagmites by evaporation of the water sources of the cave. Its color and properties directly depend on the temperature of the surrounding water, the volume of ejected volcanic source of carbon dioxide, light and other factors. If in the process of education "involved" seaweed, mussels, dead fish and animals, the travertine is more porous. To "coloring" travertine affect the pace of the formation of minerals, speed and water temperature. "Birth" travertine occurs at shallow depths, close to the air surface, which distinguishes it from its limestone "relatives", which are formed on a large sea depths. There is also the age difference: it is quite "young" mineral him from 50 thousand to 300 thousand years, and most of the limestone is not one hundred million years! As it is not amazing, but limestone and tuff now changes its properties! In the air thanks to a shift of calcium bicarbonate in the calcium carbonate slabs of travertine are dense and harder. Colours travertine also changing: for example, the pale coloration of natural mineral extraction, after becoming much brighter due to oxidation are therein iron salts.

Travertine is characterized by porosity, porous, which distinguishes it from limestone, low density and hardness (the exception is an Italian mineral, which is more durable). In travertine, due to its porosity, better than marble, thermal and sound insulation properties. Despite the relatively high percentage of water permeability, the travertine have a good frost-quality, durable, allowing them successfully not only in domestic but also in the exterior of buildings.
