Recent discussed results from St George Bank which reveal Gen Y’s are the keenest when it comes to revamping their homes this spring – nearly two-thirds of 18 to 25-year-olds plan on renovating their home in the next twelve months.

And the younger generations are not afraid to roll up their sleeves and do some of the dirty work – 68 per cent plan to take on do-it-yourself renovation programs with the help of family and friends.

Getting local council approval for structural work, extensions or additions can take up to six months, sometimes significantly longer, so you need to plan your renovation work well in advance. The preference is usually to retain the style and reproduce the line, windows, doors and door furniture so you can’t tell where the old ends and the new begins. If you go period-style, ensure you tread very delicately.
